Avatar Movie Review

After a 12-year-break, Cameron returns to feature filmmaking with a mind-bending epic that's both visually spectacular and emotionally involving. And the fact that it's in gorgeously rendered 3D is icing on the cake.In the year 2154, paraplegic Marine Jake (Worthington) is transported to the planet Pandora to join the avatar project. Soon he's in the middle of hostile territory in the genetically cloned body of the Na'vi: three metres tall with blue skin, a tail and a very sensitive ponytail. In the jungle, Jake befriends Neytiri (Saldana), who trains him in the ways of the Na'vi. But this puts him at odds with his employers, who want him to help move the Na'vi so they can plunder the land for a rare mineral.Clear parallels make the film work on multiple levels, most notably the way the plot echoes how European colonists treated native North Americans, who were at one with nature and fought using bows and arrows. And the military-corporate hawks are reminiscent of more recent conflicts, as warmongering Quaritch (Lang) and company man Selfridge (Ribisi) couldn't care less about the native population when success rates are at stake. Opposing them are the scientists (Weaver, Moore and Rao), a rebel pilot (Rodriguez), Neytiri's tribal-leader parents (Pounder and Studi) and the top Na'vi warrior (Alonso). All of these are terrific characters written and played with just enough subtlety and several surprising twists. At the centre, Worthington and Weaver have the meatiest roles, with strong moments of sardonic grit and playful humour. And each character has an important role to play in the action scenes too. Cameron also manages to write a romance between Jake and Neytiri that plays out honestly, and manages to make strong but unpreachy comments about the evils of war and the interconnection of living things.Cameron's focus on story and characters pays off by making the visual whizzery even more enjoyable. And while much of the film is animated, it's easily the most sophisticated cartoon ever made, with photorealistic creatures and settings that continually catch us off guard with their sheer presence. Cameron has even figured out how to bring life to the eyes of his animated characters; we feel every tinge of aching emotion and each gasping moment of terror. It's one wondrous, breathtaking scene after another, and one of the most viscerally entertaining films since, well, Titanic.

U2 - U2 STAR CLAYTON INVESTIGATES ASSISTANT OVER 'MISSING MILLIONS'

U2 star ADAM CLAYTON is taking legal action against his former personal assistant over allegations she siphoned off money from his multi-million dollar fortune to fund a lavish lifestyle for herself. The bassist has secured a temporary court order in his native Dublin, Ireland to freeze Carol Hawkins' assets after she allegedly stole up to $2.56 million (£1.6 million) from his accounts. Clayton is said to have fired Hawkins last month (Nov09) after she confessed to "misappropriating" some of the star's money and subsequent investigation allegedly found she had been using the musician's credit and debit cards for herself. On Friday (18Dec09) Dublin's High Court heard allegations Hawkins used Clayton's money to buy an apartment in New York City and fund holidays for her family. Hawkins admits using Clayton's cards, but disputes the sums of money involved. The star's lawyers secured an order from the court forbidding Hawkins from reducing her assets, and the judge adjourned the case until Monday

AMY WINEHOUSE - WINEHOUSE ENGAGED TO EX-HUSBAND

AMY WINEHOUSE's ex-husband BLAKE FIELDER-CIVIL has confirmed they are engaged to be married for a second time. The couple divorced in July (09) following a turbulent two-year marriage, which saw the pair sink into drug abuse and Fielder-Civil jailed on charges relating to a 2007 attack on a pub landlord. The union ended with the singer admitting adultery in court papers. Rumours of a reunion have been rampant since they were spotted enjoying an intimate night out in September (09). Winehouse has since been seen wearing her engagement ring and was snapped visiting her ex-husband's apartment in Sheffield, England earlier this month (Dec09), where he is undergoing treatment for drug addiction. Fielder-Civil has now confirmed reports they are engaged and planning to re-marry - and even considering starting a family. He tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "We're back together, and we're engaged. Amy and I have talked about getting married again and starting a family - we both definitely want kids. "This time we are doing things properly and hopefully that will help both our families come round to the idea. We've both been through a lot but we love each other the same as ever. We've tried to get on with our lives and to see other people, but it wasn't the same. There's no one like Amy. She will always be the love of my life." And Fielder-Civil is adamant they will make their second marriage work now they have both kicked their drug habits. He adds, "We're free of drugs now and we're more responsible now. I'm 100 per cent clean and I'm not going to let anyone down. Amy said, 'You inspire me.' She's proud of me for staying off drugs and she's determined to do the same."
